Introducing Myself/My Definition of Leadership

Hello! My name is Marley Spencer and I am a senior at Virginia Tech studying Agribusiness Management and pursuing a minor in Leadership and Social Change. I was born and raised in Elkton, Maryland and I went to Rising Sun High School where I played volleyball for all 4 years. Some of my hobbies include trying new coffee shops or frequenting some of my favorites, getting outside and doing activities such as hiking or paddle boarding, volunteering at an animal rescue when I am home, going to concerts, and hanging out with my cat! I currently co-lead a small group for my 3rd year in the campus ministry, NLCF, which I have been part of since coming to college. After graduating, I am thinking about pursuing a degree in non profit business management because I would love to own my own animal rescue in the near future! Some other things about me are that I have 2 dogs at home that I adore and a cat here in Blacksburg with me. I am very introverted, but I love meeting new people and doing new things. I enjoy traveling and over the summer I got to go to Utah for the second time to visit Zion National Park, Arches National Park, and Bryce Canyon National Park!

My definition of leadership is when someone takes charge of a group of people but instead of putting them to work, the leader is involved in the work and active in the process. I believe a leader is someone who does not intentionally distance themselves from what their team is doing, but someone who puts themselves in the shoes of the others and gets to work with them. My view and ideas of leadership have stayed relatively constant throughout college. I think before studying leadership, I was shown many great examples of what leaders should look like and how they should act. While I have learned more in depth about the position of leaders and how teams interact, etc., I think my outlook on leadership has remained consistent.
